Nursery School

St. Stephen’s Nursery School is located in the lower level of North Hall on the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church campus, 351 Main Street.  Our students are primarily from Ridgefield, but we have also had students from the surrounding communities including South Salem, Redding and Danbury.  Although some of our student are also parishioners at St. Stephen’s, the majority of students are not and represent diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.

Mission

Our mission at St. Stephen’s Nursery School is to provide a safe, nurturing, and educationally rich environment that promotes learning, self-esteem, and personal development.  St. Stephen’s Nursery School was established in 1969 for St. Stephen’s Parish families and the broader community of Ridgefield and surrounding towns.

The school is operated by the local parish, directed by the Board of Trustees, and licensed by the Department of Health Services, State of Connecticut .  It is a member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools.

Philosophy

St. Stephen’s Nursery School believes in the following statements:

  • Young children need a secure and loving environment for emotional and social growth.  Rules and expectations at school are clear, and teachers provide models of mutual respect and care.

  • Young children grow and develop best intellectually when they can structure their own learning.  Children are free to choose from a wide range of developmentally appropriate manipulative activities.  They are encouraged to ask their own questions and are given opportunities to seek their answers in an enriched, carefully planned environment.

  • Young children are aided to form friendships, develop self confidence, and discover the joys of learning.

Program

Play is the work of children.  As they imagine, pretend, build, and manipulate, they discover truth and learn about the world in which they live.  Our program acknowledges how young children learn; through movement, sight, sound, smell, sensing, feeling, taste, and touching.  To create our unique program, we have incorporated this knowledge with early childhood educational principles and fashioned our school into a traditional, play-centered nursery school.

Classes

The age requirement for each class corresponds to the Ridgefield Public School System.  The cut-off date is January 3rd.  Enrollment for a school year typically begins the previous January, and parents are encouraged to make an appointment to visit the school with their child.  Enrollment for the three-year-old class is taken on a first come, first served basis, and we do maintain a waiting list once our classes have filled.  Enrollment for the four-year-old class and the Pre-K class is also on a first come, first served basis, with preference given to prior years’ students.  We follow the Ridgefield Public School Calendar, starting a week later and finishing the first week of June.

Youth Groups

The St. Stephen's Youth Group is a gathering of youth from around the community of Ridgefield and other nearby towns. It is an ecumenical Christian group that meets to have fun, eat snacks, and talk about how God is in each person's life. The leader of the group is Cuyler Black, who is the Youth Minister at St. Stephen's.

Middle School

The middle school group (Grades 6 - 8) meets every Wednesday from 3:00 - 5:00 pm in the barn.  The middle school youth group also meets one Friday evening a month from 7:00 - 9:00pm.

High School

The high school group (Grades 9 - 12) meets every Sunday from 6:30 - 8:30 in the barn. This group also has monthly retreats and other activities throughout the year.

H. O. P. E. (Helping Other People Endure)

In 1999 under the vision of a few people St. Stephen's held its first youth mission trip. The success of the first trip has grown this summer weeklong trip into a huge success. Youth and Adult leaders have traveled to Pennsylvania, North Carolina, West Virginia and New Hampshire to help residents of those areas. The main goal of this mission trip is to make residents houses warmer, safer and drier. This trip is open to youth who are graduating 8th graders through grade 12.

Christian Meditation

Do Christians meditate? Join us every Tuesday at 7:30 in the Choir Room and find out for yourself!!! Christians have been meditating at least from the time of the Desert Fathers and Mothers in the Third Century.

What is the point? Although meditation itself pursues no goal, there are very tangible benefits. Regular practice leads to a deeper spiritual life and connection with God. More visibly, practitioners seem to have a noticeable sense of calm, that permeates every day life, transforming relationships and even improving health. Meditation has been shown to reduce blood pressure!!

What if I have never meditated before? No problem. Beginners are most welcome. Like everything else, it gets easier and more rewarding with practice. You may not be ready to start today. But if you are feeling called to try, please join us any Tuesday.
